Farewell to a legend: Bruce Mansfield dies, aged 71

Article image for Farewell to a legend: Bruce Mansfield dies, aged 71

It’s with very heavy hearts that 3AW reports Bruce Mansfield has died after a long battle with prostate cancer, aged 71.

Bruce died peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Sunday morning.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bruce’s family, particularly his wife, Jill, their three children and his beloved grandchildren.

Bruce is a legend of Melbourne’s entertainment industry after a glittering career spanning five decades across TV and radio.

He was a TV newsreader for many years before he and long-time 3AW co-host Phil Brady dominated Melbourne’s airwaves after joining together for Nightline and Remember When in 1991.

WRITTEN TRIBUTES

Dawna Ward-Doma
Sending heartfelt condolences to Bruce’s dear Family, I was so sad to hear Bruce had lost the long battle to conquer his illness, he was a magic man with a great sense of fun. Although I never met him I felt I knew him through my trusty little wireless. God Speed Bruce travel well and free of all ailments, I will miss your dulcet tones but I’m sure your spirit will always be at 3AW and beyond. Thank you for all the nights of entertainment. God Bless your family with love and hugs always from an avid listener. Dawnie

I moved to Melbourne in 1992 to go to Uni. For some reason at the age of 19 I became a Bruce (and Phil) fan. Bruce had an infectious personality and related to all callers. I have learned just how important this is. Like many, I never saw or met the man in person. I just knew him as Bruce and he just made me smile. RIP Bruce. JT.

Such a sad day. I started listening to Bruce & Phil back in 1993 when my world collapsed with the death of my sister at age 47. They helped me through those dark times along with Keith McGowan. I still listen to Nightline although am very disappointed with the change in time.
My thoughts are with Bruce’s adored family as well as his 3AW family.

Heather Grieve

Very sad news to hear this morning, I have literally grown up with your radio and TV life and was privileged enough to have spoken to you on radio. Truly the passing of a legend RIP Bruce Mansfield.

Gary Cosby – Fairfield, Ohio USA
I started listening to 3AW because of the footy coverage, and quickly became a fan of Bruce & Phil. The humor and wholesome nature of their show reminded me so much of my grandparents and aunts & uncles. The many phone conversations with their followers showed how much compassion and genuine love they had for their audience. Their banter provided me with many hours of entertainment.
The computer and Internet allowed me to reach halfway around the world and become a fan. It now allows me to extend my deepest sympathies to Bruce’s family, Phil, Simon and all at 3AW for your loss. Bruce was a true gentleman and a very special entertainer. I will truly miss him and say a prayer for him.
Sincerely,
Gary Cosby

Very sorry to hear the sad news. Bruce was much loved by so many. In my teenage years my mother Joyce would sit up and listen to Bruce and Phil on the radio. Often ringing up and winning prizes after a few sherry’s. Sometimes she would have forgotten she had won and family members would have to remind her. Our family have also followed the tradition after our mum passed away 22 years ago. My daughter Danielle and I had the pleasure to meet Bruce at the Good Friday Appeal 5 years ago when she was being interviewed on 3aw. Thanks for the memories Phil. RIP.

As general manager marketing of a prominent organisation I met with my colleagues and 3AW management around 26 years ago to agree to be initial program sponsor of Night Life with Bruce and Phil. What a great team. What a wonderful program. What wonderful personalities. How wonderful was Bruce and how wonderful still is Phil.
I became a loyal listener to this very day, albeit to a much shorter program presumably directed by management.
But to Bruce, whose soul I am certain lives on forever; to his family, whose grief knows no boundary right now; to his friends; to all the fellow listeners; I extend my deepest sympathy and love.
And Bruce, enjoy the love we’re showing you, because you knew you had it many decades ago, and continued to keep it.  [?]

Margaret Keane
We emigrated here from Ireland for a better life . I was sponsored on a 457 visa to work as a Nurse .
I thought we would have a better life , but it has been a struggle for my husband to find steady work & things have not worked out well at all for us .
Sometimes I could not make sense of it .
We always listened to Talk radio in London & Ireland . I tuned into niteline & always felt soothed listening to Bruce, voice. He listened to each caller without dismissing them & his voice was like the sound of silver sparkles on the ocean waves ..

Jackie
Deepest sympathy to Bruce’s family, friends and colleagues, on his passing.
His fun, kindness and compassion will be very much missed, especially his love and devotion to his family, more so to his much beloved grandchildren.

Wilma
How shocked and saddened I am to hear this news. My first thoughts as an ex Ivanhoe resident were of Jill (his perfect match) and dear Phil who spoke with such strength and love just now.
I remember this about Jill. I met her 1n 1974 at Airlie Hospital where we has both had babies. Sadly my baby had died shortly after birth. While all the other mothers, afraid for my feelings, skirted round me and held their babies away if they passed me, along came Jill and shared her baby with me when my arms were aching for a baby to hold….She knew somehow what to do. That is the sort of lady Bruce was lucky to meet. To Jill and all her and Bruces adored children and grand children my very sincere condolences.
To Phil his partner in entertainment please accept my sympathy and support. I admire your dignity, riotous humour you shared with Bruce, your faith and care for people and know this sustains you. Stay strong.
To all at AW, tough times for you all and my sympathy to you

Arthur Koutsioulis

Julie Mountjoy
My sincere sympathy to Bruce’s family. My dear mother listened to 3aw Bruce and Phil every evening.
When she sadly passed away I phoned and spoke to Bruce. I wanted to let Bruce and Phil know
just how much they had meant to my mum. I would ask her each evening what she was doing –
I’m listening to the Boys she would say, I love them so much. Bruce gave me a $100 Coatman voucher. I tried to tell him I didn’t ring for that only to let him know how much my mother loved
listening. He said to me – I want you to have it Julie and every time you wear that coat think of
your mum. I will never forget how kind he was to me. I still wear that coat 15 years on and think
of her each time.
Bruce Mansfield you will be so sadly missed by all.
Sleep Peacefully.

Steven Greenvale
My deep shock this morning at hearing the passing of such a wonderful human being . All my sympathies to the 3AW family and loved ones .
I’ll miss the way Bruce used to sigh at my calls when the subject matter was about space or the paranormal lol
Ill also miss how he would moan at Phil when he went on too long and question Phil when he claimed he would donate to a charity but Phil would never confirm anything 🙂
Most of all ill miss how Bruce and Phil would play off each other in a sarcastic witty manner that was lost on some totally but enjoyed by everyone else.
Bruce never had a bad word to say about anyone
And even when he received attacks or Critism from callers he would remain silent and humbly go on .
He and Phil were compassionate to the vulnerable sick and the lonely and never turned any caller away unless you were vile as Bruce would sometimes yell out lol
I’ll miss you Bruce how you referred to me and others as your mate , how you made me feel like my call mattered and when you finished calling me mad after I yelled you were marvellous! I knew I mattered to you and I made a connection with you .
I’ll miss you Bruce because you and Phil were like my favourite uncles and you always stuck for me
When I was critisised or attacked by callers who thought I called too much or my topics bored people. You always made me and everyone who called feel special and every topic was heard
And everyone had their say..
To Jill, your husband was a legend and a gentleman and like you I loved him dearly

Jackie

I will never ever forget the first time I called up the station as a 15year old boy, now aged 39 and they Bruce let me play my Trombone over the phone. As I couldn’t read sheet music but had a talent that I could play anything by ear, so I played the theme song to Hawaii 5-0 which was my favourite song.
I’ve been a listener to the program every night which has brought me much comfort as I’ve spent my entire in and out of hospital with a very severe chronic illness and many nights in bed listening to Bruce and Phil, he has been sadly missed over the past months and the the program will never ever be the same without the funny banter between Bruce and Phil.
My heart goes out to his wife Jill, his children and grandchildren which he often talked about and said goodnight to, you will very sadly missed from all your listeners.

Our deepest sympathy to Jill and family. Bruce will be sadly missed by his family and his radio family. We went on a cruise on the Queen Mary hosted by Bruce and Gill. Thank you Bruce for making our trip such a memorable one. A photo of you and I hangs proudly on my wall at home. Thank you for hours of listening pleasure. Our love to Jill and family and your beautiful grandchildren.

Royce Deckker

It started with Uncle Roy and John Blackman and then with Darren James at 3AW and I then followed you to 3AK. You went missing for a short time, but thankfully you turned up with Phil on 3AW doing Remember When on a Sunday night and then Nightline 5 days a week. How good it was to have you back on radio.

How long would this stint last -would the listeners buy in.I would tape all the nightline shows, just in case the magic ended. Twenty five years later you and Phil were still there. Yes there was a slight hiccup when you went to 3AK (again) for 1 year, but all was forgiven and you were back where you belonged.

Thank You for all the voices, jokes, impersonations, characters and most of all your love of radio. Night time radio will never be the same without you.

Carl Moore

What a kind man

I grew up with Bruce on the nightly news. I met him at Waltons department store during a competition that I had won as a kid in the 70’s. I occasionally listened to the Nightline radio session with Phil Brady. He came across as lovely man with a wicked sense of humour during the radio show. RIP Bruce Mansfield, thanks for the entertainment.

Carol

Goodbye Bruce. You are a legend and will be missed. I now reside in Bundaberg but for 55years was a Melbournian. Still call Melbourne home. For my last 10 years in Melbourne my radio was stuck on 3AW. If I was still home when the breakfast clowns came on I had to scoot as I was going to miss my 6.01am train 🙂 , if boss not around Neil would be in one ear as I worked, and Bruce and Phil put me to sleep every night. Loved listening to Bruce and Phil. Nothing like them here in Bundy. Nothing like 3AW. Sleep peacefully Bruce. 3AW will not be the same without you.

Luke & family

Fond memories of many years with Uncle Bruce and his family, from cleaning out the flathead in the Bay to meeting Reg Ramp of a morning and telling him you were Richard Simmons off the TV. Long sessions playing 500 and spending weekends at the Righi. Sister Narelle and Uncle Roy were a morning staple in the 80s. In later times we both had regular calls from Margaret in West Heidelberg, and later I would stream the show whilst working in Monrovia, Liberia.

Much love to Aunty Jill, all the kids and the grandkids. Farewell Uncle Bruce; a life well lived.

Jan Laczynski

For many of us it was Eye Witness news Ch 0, then a few guest star appearances on Prisoner reading the news, then Night Line. R.i.p Bruce you made a difference to Melbourne, your family and your Radio family.

Mandy

You are going to be missed terribly

Your were a favorite especially to my mum who you will now meet in heaven

Thought and prayers to you and your family and especially phil

You will never be replaced and will miss you at night

Love delorenzo Family

Brian Pieper

Farewell Bruce.

Your 3AW program was enjoyed by my mother for many years up to her death in 2009. Uplifting and humorous, Bruce’s sly droll wit was aided and abetted by Philip Brady’s anecdotes and concerns for the listeners. For those of us over 60; a link back to the early days of ‘Channel 0’ and of course Grahame Kennedy’s magical era. Sadly and fondly missed, rest in peace Bruce.

Rob Woodroffe

I fondly remember Bruce as ‘Chinese Superman’ on Hey Hey It’s Saturday-very very funny guy. RIP.

Linda Sbisa

Rest in peace Bruce. I will miss listening to you every night.

My condolences to Jill and family.

THE END OF AN ERA—A TRUE PROFFESIONAL!! THANKS FOR LOTS OF WONDERFUL MEMORIES

Evelyn

So sorry to hear this news. Like many here I grew up listening to Bruce and Phil, through ups and downs, through many New Year’s fireworks and Christmases, from teenage-hood to adulthood. No matter what, Bruce and Phil were always there. I often went to sleep with a smile, laughing at the banter and witticims, or quietly listening to some words of inspiration read by Bruce. His reference to ‘vile swine’ would always crack me up. They don’t make radio announcers like him any more – true gentlemen of the airwaves. So sad for Phil in losing a friend and colleague – keep going Phil, and sincere condolences to you and to Bruce’s family. He is now at peace and in God’s loving presence.

Jayme Doran

I started listening to Nightline a couple of years ago on and off and later became a regular listener to Nightline in 2015 and Remember When a year earlier in 2014 and still listening in to the program online everynight from Toowoomba in Queensland, Bruce was a true character and a legend I liked Bruce and Phil’s chat with John Blackman every Thursday Night (back in the 8pm-Midnight days of Nightline) whenever he was on as well as Dave and Dad (which I really liked) and Storytime I also liked Bruce’s stories about the good old days and of course plently of laughs Bruce Mansfield had a great rapport with Phillip and the regulars of the program. He was a true gentleman, a legend and will be very sadly missed my thoughts go out to his family as well as his friends and colleagues at 3AW at this very sad time. RIP Bruce Mansfield you will never be forgotten thanks for all the laughs, the good times and the memories over the years.

Lynn Ziya, Box Hill

My brother ended his own life in February 2010.  In June of that year I began studying counselling as a way to try to understand what happened to my brother.  Every Wednesday night for 18 months while my two babies were being tucked into bed by my mother I attended the counselling course and every one of those nights I listened without fail to Bruce and Phil on 3AW for the length of my journey home which was about an hour.  My course was almost over when my brother in law also took his life.  The course alone did not keep me going in those dark days.  What I heard on the radio every Wednesday night were real live counselling sessions which warmed my heart and kept me determined to finish my course.  Bruce and Phil were non-judgemental and patient with warmth, compassion and gentleness; the qualities that I had been learning made a good counsellor.   I had a good laugh sometimes too.  I loved it when the same old callers rang every other week and told Bruce and Phil what they’d been up to.    When my course finished I stopped listening to Bruce and Phil because I didn’t have that driving time anymore, I was putting my babies to bed myself.  I thought about it and said to myself many times that ‘I must put on the radio and listen to Bruce and Phil, they were so funny’, but I never did.  I wish I had!   Bruce, you helped me through a bad time.  Thank you so much. This is my memory of you and I will never forget you.   Ps.  Phil I will be tuning in from now on…

Evan Broadway

Very sad news to lose one of the last true radio legends.  A consummate professional who knew how to do a live read and look after clients, something that’s lacking today with new talent. I was inspired to go into this crazy industry after listening Bruce and John and loved story time on AW in the 80’s. Truely grateful to have worked with you Bruce and will never forget the stories you shared.

Annette McCulloch

I have been an avid Bruce listener since the Uncle Roy days. He gave me so much joy and laughter and was a great comfort to me. Marcus

I met Bruce and Phil at a book signing of ‘Tales from the Scrapbook’ at Whitehorse Plaza in Box Hill in 1994 or 1995. I dragged a mate along with me, who to this very day I’m sure thinks I am weird. Not least because, being in year 11 or 12, I dragged him along to buy a book about a couple of old codgers, meet said old codgers and have them sign my book. But such was the appeal of Bruce, Phil and Bruce and Phil that I spent much of my teenage years, and in to later life, falling asleep to Nightline or Remember When. When my first daughter was born, one of the songs that I regularly sang, and continue to sing, to her was ‘Midnight, the stars and you’.  To steal a line from another regular closing number…  ‘It’s time to say goodbye, goodbye. It’s sad, but time’s the reason why we must bid farewell…’

John

So sad to lose Bruce, a wonderful personality and a great radio entertainer. Night line listeners will miss you Bruce. Our thoughts are with Bruce’s family. I am saddened and don’t know what else to say.
