Farmers in Victoria’s northwest have been hit hard by Thursday’s rain.

Farms around Birchip were inundated with flash floods of over 80mm, killing hundreds of sheep.

Local farmer Matt Ryan told Nick McCallum the rain was sorely needed around months ago, but now it’s too late.

“One farmer’s lost up to 500 sheep.”

Birchip, population 700, is 100 southwest of Swan Hill.
