The fight against horse-drawn carriages in Melbourne’s CBD is gaining momentum, with one lobby group taking to the streets in protest.

Kristin Leigh, campaign manager from Melbourne Against Horse-Drawn Carriages, told 3AW Drive her group would take action against carriage owners who defy new regulations.

She’s called for the “cruel” practice to stop.

“It’s cruel because the horses are on hard surfaces most of the day, they’re forced to do 12-hour shifts and then they return to inner city vacant lots where they have no ability to graze, whatsoever,” Ms Leigh said.

“They’re tied up most of the day, unable to move and express themselves freely.”
