Four homes have been confirmed destroyed and the number could rise following the 8800-hectare blaze at Barnawatha in the north-east.

The fire continues to burn within containment lines.

Fire crews are working hard to have it controlled before the fire danger increases on Christmas day.

The cool change that swept through Melbourne yesterday afternoon took a little while longer to get to the north-east.

Hot northerlies continued to fan a fire that started at Barnawartha at midday burning through 8000 hectares in the Indigo Valley towards Yakandandah.

But then, finally, the south to south-westerly winds came through and some areas of the fire zone received as much as 20 millimetres of rain.

More than 60 residents were temporarily displaced last night.

Mild conditions are expected to help firefighters on the ground today before damage assessment teams start to move through.
