Fires hero: Lorne shopkeeper gives firefighters the keys

A Lorne shopkeeper has been hailed as one of the heroes of the Victorian bushfires after he gave firefighters the keys to his evacuated shop and told them to ‘help yourselves’.

Foodworks owner Alex Ng reluctantly confirmed the story to Justin Smith and Kate Stevenson after a call to the 3AW Breakfast Rumour File this morning.

‘In the late afternoon we had to evacuate Lorne, so we handed the key to the fire brigade and said ‘Come in, help yourself with whatever you need’.

Justin and Kate gave Mr Ng a $500 Good Guys of the Day voucher.

‘I tell you what, I think we should donate the voucher to the people of Wye River,’ Mr Ng said.
