Deputy Premier James Merlino has told 3AW Mornings Daniel Andrews will visit India and petition the Indian government for Puneet Puneet’s return to Australia.

“The Premier, Heidi, is visiting India next week,” Mr Merlino said this morning.

“He will be directly raising this with the Indian government.”

Puneet appeared in court overnight in New Dehli, where journalist Tawqeer Hussain is covering the case.

“He said he’s always maintained the position that he understands the pain the family is going through but the family should understand his pain as well,” Mr Hussain told 3AW Mornings.

“He says Australia is treating him like a terrorist and this is just a road accident that happens all the time in India.”

In October 2008 the learner driver hit and killed 19-year-old Dean Hofstee and seriously injured Clancy Coker before fleeing the country, and has been fighting extradition since.

The case will return to court on February 2.
