An independent review has been launched into the RSPCA inspectorate.

It follows strong public scrutiny of its handling of several recent cases of animal cruelty.

RSPCA chief Dr Liz Walker told Neil Mitchell on 3AW the review was being taken ‘very seriously’ and was centred around meeting public expectation.

The animal welfare organisation had been criticised heavily over how it handled reports of horse cruelty on a farm at Bulla.

More than 20 horses were later found dead and many more malnourished.

‘It certainly wasn’t our finest hour,’ Dr Walker confessed on 3AW Mornings.

‘It really highlighted the pressure our inspectorate team is under.’
