In an alarming new trend, one-in-six drivers are testing positive to illegal substances in the Geelong region, according to Highway Patrol members.

Senior Sergeant Shane Cole told 3AW Breakfast Geelong Highway Patrol are now finding five drug drivers to one drink driver.

“Unfortunately drugs are now becoming our big issue now down here,” Snr Sgt Cole said.

“Highway patrol and State Highway are the only people who can test for drugs down here.

“If it was statewide with every police member doing it, God knows what the numbers would be.”

The Geelong Advertiser reported six learner drivers have tested positive to drugs in the past three months.
