It comes as Athletics Australia and the State Government announce that the late Peter Norman will be honoured with a bronze statue at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne.

Athletics Australia CEO, Darren Gocher told Neil Mitchell it’s great recognition for Norman.

“We are erecting a statue of Peter, it’ll be built over the next couple of months,” Darren said.

“We’ve announced Peter Norman day, The US has actually celebrated the 9th of October as Peter Norman Day for the last 12 years or so.

“We’ve decided to do the same.”

A humanitarian award has also been announced in Peter’s name.

“Peter was a warm, decent and brave man who took a stand for what he thought was right,” Neil said.

“He’s finally being recognised today.

“In my view he was a great Australian.”
