Motorists are being urged to turn on their headlights and slow down as foggy conditions worsen across the state.

The weather bureau says the fog is largely due to very light winds and may also contain smoke particles due to planned burns.

Visibility is expected to remain dangerously low in the metropolitan area throughout the morning peak, prompting a warning from VicRoads.

“We need motorists to slow down,” a spokesman said.

“It’s like pea soup across parts of Melbourne.”

Stephen King from the BoM updated Tony Jones on Melbourne’s foggy start to Friday, saying the fog is expected to lift during the morning.

Meanwhile, paramedics have taken one man to hospital following a multivehicle crash in West Melbourne.

Dynon Road remains closed, including the in-bound exit ramp from Citulink.
