A former Australian diplomat has branded the government’s decision to recall all of its foreign ambassadors for a two-day meeting as a ‘complete waste of money.’

Bruce Haigh hit out at the news on 3AW Breakfast.

Australia’s ambassadors will be brought back to the country to meet with Julie Bishop to shape foreign policy.

But Mr Haigh said it was unnecessary.

‘It’s nonsense and a complete waste of money,’ he said.

‘They’re not going to come out of it with anything new or that wouldn’t have come out of a questionnaire.’

Mr Haigh said the summit was in response to Brexit and the election of Donald Trump as president.
