Former NRL adviser weighs in on pride jersey boycott and outcry

Tom Elliott

A former gender adviser to the NRL admits she’s “torn” by news several Manly players won’t play this week because they are refusing to wear a pride jersey to celebrate inclusivity and diversity.

It’s reported as many as seven players have objected on “religious and cultural” grounds.

Professor Catherine Lumby told Neil Mitchell the issue had not been handled well.

“I actually don’t think we should be in the business of forcing people to do anything like that,” she said on 3AW Mornings.

“I might be Left wing, but I’m a bit of a libertarian.

“I also think it’s a bad idea, strategically.

“If you want people to be inclusive and embracing, probably mandating things and not consulting is the worst way you can go about it.”
