The former principal at the Parkville Youth Justice Centre has told 3AW politics needs to be taken out of the system.

Brendan Murray, who stood down in March, has told Neil Mitchell the youth justice system is broken.

NEIL: “Do you think it’s broken?”

BRENDAN: “Yes, I think it is. You can’t really dress it up.”

“You put kids into horrible situations like lockdowns, you treat them rough … they don’t get better.

“They perpetrate more crime, they’re angrier,” he said.

Mr Murray says youths illegally detained at Barwon will most likely get compensation from the state.
