The Premier who gave Crown Casino its first licence in Victoria has backed a proposed $8.9 billion takeover from US private equity giant Blackstone Inc.

Jeff Kennett told Neil Mitchell it was the fresh start the casino needed after a damning inquiry found Crown had facilitated money laundering and brought in high-rollers with links to organised crime.

“The facility itself doesn’t need to be changed, what needs to be changed is the quality of the management,” Mr Kennett told Neil Mitchell.

Neil Mitchell asked whether the casino would be impact long-term by the move away from people visiting the CBD.

Mr Kennett said the facility was still “relevant” and said immediate changes to COVID-19 rules would make an instant impact.

“The quicker we give people the option of wearing, or not wearing, a mask … we give them the option or returning to work where they see fit,” he said.

“The government can provide leadership, but this continual control is destroying hope, it’s destroying activity.

“The quicker we get to something that is realistic, the better.

“It is easy, not difficult.”
