Former Australian rugby star David Pocock says fossil fuel advertising in sport is “the new cigarette sponsorship” and cause for community concern.

It came after the Wallabies announced a sponsorship extension with Santos.

Professor David Rowe, Emeritus Professor of Cultural Research at the Institute of Cultural and Society University of Western Sydney, said there was no doubt many companies tried to buy the “hearts and minds” of people through a key institution like sport.

“I’m uneasy about the way in which this money is filtering in to various areas of sport, both elite sport, community sport, indigenous sport, women’s sport – there is a lot of money that is flushing around the place to try and buy some good will,” he said.
