Former Victoria Police chief Kel Glare says the decision to release metro drivers into regional Victoria at 6pm on Friday could spell disaster.

He rang Neil Mitchell on Wednesday to voice his concern.

Under Victoria’s roadmap to reopening the state, the divide between regional and metro will no longer exist from 6pm on Friday, ahead of the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

It means people will be free to leave Melbourne and head to regional areas, and vice versa.

Mr Glare told Neil Mitchell the timing was nonsensical.

“Somebody has made a really bad error,” he said.

“There will be absolute chaos on the roads.”
