‘Formidable’: Former mayor whacks potential Lord Mayors — except one…
Former mayor and current Monash councillor Geoff Lake has identified businesswoman Sally Capp as the most “formidable” candidate to run for Lord Mayor of Melbourne.
And he’s drawn a line through several high-profile names.
In his regular appearance on 3AW Drive with Tom Elliott, Cr Lake cast doubt over the credentials of five other potential candidates, including Sam Newman, Anne Peacock, Phil Cleary, Jane Garrett and Gary Morgan.

Sam Newman will never be elected Lord Mayor because voters, whether they be business voters or resident voters, take these position seriously.
Sam Newman is a great entertainer, but he is not suitable to be mayor of Melbourne.
Phil Cleary is capable of being a good Lord Mayor, I’m not sure he is capable of winning an election.
Anne Peacock is somebody I don’t know other than the little bit I know from reading about her. She would be a refreshing change in terms of her gender, I’m not sure there’s much else going for her.
I think we could do better in the person that serves our public interest than being tied to a massive gambling empire (Crown).
Gary Morgan has run for Lord Mayor for more years than I’ve been alive. I don’t think things are going to change for him (in terms of success).
Jane Garrett is a very good member of parliament and I think that’s where she should appropriately stay.
She’s capable of significant things and I’m sure we’ll hear more about her in the future.
Great experience. Someone who’s well-connected, well-respected across Melbourne. If she runs I believe she will be a formidable candidate.
Oscar’s popular in Moreland, I think he will struggle to translate that popularity into Melbourne
