Four people have been arrested after a stolen vehicle was tracked travelling across Melbourne, allegedly clocking speeds of more than 220km/h.

Police sighted the black BMW X5 on the Monash Freeway inbound at about 7.30pm and the Air Wing followed the car as it drove erratically through suburbs including Prahran, Melbourne, Flemington and Doncaster.

Three passengers — 19-year-old man, 21-year-old woman and 20-year-old woman, all from Wodonga — got out of the car in St Kilda East and were swiftly taken into police custody. The driver, a 23-year-old Wodonga man, crashed into a pole in Malvern and was taken to hospital under police guard.
