About 70 Little Penguins have been killed by foxes on Middle Island, the first bird massacre since the world-first Maremma program began on the island 11 years ago.

Chair of the Middle Island Project Working Group, Dr Anne Wallis, told 3AW Drive the deaths were devastating.

“Foxes usually take birds around the neck and there is evidence of that,” Dr Wallis said.

“It’s so unfortunate.”

Dr Wallis said the Maremma guard dogs are not on the island all year round.

Shane Jacobson starred in the 2015 movie Oddball, which was based on the project.

The sad discovery was made yesterday morning.

About 40% of the island’s birds have been wiped out.
