Freedom of speech debate reignited as controversial Bill Leak cartoon draws attention of Human Rights Commission
Freedom of speech has again come under the spotlight in Australia after a controversial cartoon attracted the attention of the Human Rights Commission.
Bill Leak from The Australian split opinions with a recent cartoon depicting an indigenous man drinking alcohol and not knowing the name of his son.
A formal complaint has been made to the Human Rights Commission and it is investigating whether it breaches the racial discrimination act.
Reuben Brand, political cartoonist from New Matilda, told Neil Mitchell that Leak had form.
‘I’ve got nothing against Bill personally, it’s just his work is racially divisive,’ he said.
But Neil Mitchell disagreed, saying it put the spotlight on an important issue.
