Fremantle Council cancels Australia Day celebrations due to cultural sensitivity
Fremantle Council has voted to cancel Australia Day because of cultural sensitivity from the indigenous community.
Councillors on Wednesday night voted ten to one in favour of cancelling it from next year.
Fireworks and other events have been cancelled.
Neil Mitchell says there is a divide in the community whether or not to change the day.
But history says that’s when modern Australia began with the European arrival.
Luke Pearson, a young Indigenous community leader and founder of Indigenous X, told Neil Mitchell he expected the council decision to cancel Australia Day would spread across Australia.
‘It’s only a matter of time, ‘ he told 3AW Mornings.
He wants another date to celebrate Australia Day, but hasn’t decided which day yet.
