A submission to the federal parliamentary inquiry into foreign interference on social media has unearthed fresh alarming findings which have heightened concerns about the danger posed by TikTok.

The Chinese government has installed Communist Party figures in top positions at TikTok’s parent company and deleted documents reveal the relationship between TikTok and parent company ByteDance is much more intimate than previously thought.

Chair of the Senate’s select committee on foreign interference through social media, Liberal MP James Paterson, says the revelations raise “very serious questions about the national security risks” posed by the app.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil is reviewing the findings of a departmental probe considering a ban on the app from government devices. It follows bans in the UK, US, Canada and several European governments.
