A fungi expert has issued a stark warning to those who forage mushrooms.

It comes after three people died in Leongatha after eating poisonous wild mushrooms, with a fourth person fighting for life in hospital.

PhD student in the field of mycology (the study of fungi) at Melbourne University, Grace Boxshall, says there’s “always going to be risks” associated with foraging mushrooms.

South Gippsland mayor, Nathan Hersey, has been foraging mushrooms for 10 years and will continue to do so in the future.

“If you don’t know what it is, don’t even touch it,” Mr Hersey told Neil Mitchell.
