An exasperated Tom Elliott says the state government is trying to “con” Victorians after it banned gas connections on all new homes from the beginning of 2024.

He says it’s an “absolute con job being done for short-term political gain” and will be worse for the environment and make bills more expensive, not cheaper as claimed.

“They couldn’t get their numbers straight with the Commonwealth Games – why would you trust them to get the numbers straight on gas?” the 3AW Drive host said.

But the CEO of the Energy Efficiency Council says the government’s plan was the right move and was only a “modest” one.

“I understand your sceptism about government numbers, but we’ve looked at evidence from a whole bunch of parties … it stacks up pretty well,” Luke Menzel told Tom Elliott.
