GAME DAY: Carlton v Sydney at the MCG | 3AW Radio

Leigh Matthews couldn’t fit Alex Silvagni into the votes.

‘Clearances, contested possessions – that was the starting point,’ Lethal said.

‘So I went for players that did that for Carlton.’

Carlton backman Alex Silvagni spoke to 3AW in the rooms.

Silvagni had a fantastic game, keeping Lance Franklin to one goal and two marks.

He said he tried to keep things simple.

‘He’s such a freak of an athlete,’ Silvagni said.

‘I had a couple of narrow focuses, just to win each contest and be proactive.

‘It was nice to get the job done.’

FULL TIME

Carlton has run out 19-point winners at the MCG.

A five-goal burst after half-time saw the Blues break the game open, and they never lost the lead.

Matt Wright booted four goals for the Blues, while Alex Silvagni did a stellar job in defence.

Gary Rohan was stretchered off the ground after a horrible landing in a marking contest which saw him knocked out cold. However, play continued at the other end, allowing the Blues to kick a goal.

Leigh Matthews said play would have stopped if Rohan had been anywhere near the play.

Young gun Jack Silvagni could be in trouble with a shoulder injury.

Carlton’s inaugural women’s Best and Fairest Brianna Davey joined 3AW during the main break.

‘It’s great to be able to come back to the sport we grew up loving,’ Davey said.

Sydney has made a big late change ahead of this clash.

Kurt Tippett (hip) has been withdrawn, with James Rose coming in.

Carlton is unchanged, which means Marc Murphy will play.

=====

Sydney coach John Longmire spoke to 3AW before the game.

He said the side needs to hunt the ball harder.

‘We know what we can do when we play well, we need to rediscover it,’ Longmire said.

Not many of us would have predicted Carlton to be above Sydney on the ladder after five rounds.

Yet here we are.

The Swans are desperate for a win to ease the pressure, at least for another week.

But the Blues might see this clash as a chance to double their win tally for 2017.

Can Carlton pile more misery on last year’s Grand Finalists? Or will the Swans finally break the duck?
