The Mayor of the City of Monash has welcomed the prospect of council reform and possible amalgamations.

It comes after Natalie Hutchins, Minister for Local Government, floated the idea on 3AW Drive.

Geoff Lake told Tom Elliott he wasn’t worried by the idea, which could see some councils abolished.

He said he welcomed any idea which would make things run more effectively.

‘I was quite pleased by it,’ Mr Lake said when asked what he thought of Ms Hutchin’s idea.

‘There hasn’t been any debate about structural reform since Jeff Kennett was in government.’
