‘Get rid of it’: Why Tom Elliott wants preferential voting scrapped

Tom Elliott has called for preferential voting to be scrapped, stating a ‘first-past-the-post’ system would be much simpler for voters.
The 3AW Mornings host clarified it’s not because he wants more Liberals in power, after revealing many seats which would’ve changed in the recent federal election, if the ‘first-past-the-post’ system was in play.
“Our preferential voting system has some major flaws,” he said.

“Get rid of it.”
Political strategist Glenn Druery, known as the ‘Preference Whisperer’, disagreed with Tom Elliott, stating preferential voting is a “great system” of voting.
“Preference voting is wonderful, and you’ve only got to look across the pond at the US to see the alternative,” Mr Druery said.

“Some people’s choices are odd, but we live in a democracy and we live in a country where choices matter!”
