Gillon McLachlan calls for calm as GWS academy debate heats up

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan says there’s been an overreaction to Greater Western Sydney’s hot start to the season.

The league’s chief executive called for calm during his regular spot on the Neil Mitchell program.

There’s been fierce debate between interstate and Victorian-based clubs this week over the concessions given to the Giants.

McLachlan said it was too early to say whether the club had received too much.

‘They’re 4-2, they’re playing exciting footy, let’s just celebrate that for a bit,’ he said on 3AW Mornings.

‘They haven’t even made the eight.

‘The (Gold Coast) Suns haven’t made the eight yet and they’re a year more advanced.

‘If they (Giants) make the eight and are very successful and have repeated success, then I think we can start worrying about how beneficial the concessions were.’
