Gillon McLachlan forces men-only rethink for Carbine Club
Changes are being made to the Carbine Club’s traditional grand final lunch after AFL boss Gillon McLachlan raised concerns about the exclusion of women.
Members were told yesterday that following discussions with the AFL, segments of the lunch will now reflect the role of women in the sport.
Former president Leon Wiegard told 3AW Breakfast other branches, such as the one in New South Wales, have already admitted women.
‘In my time on the committee (the issue of admitting women) came up from time to time; we had that balancing act between what the founding fathers wanted and moving on with the times.
‘I don’t think (changing the rules to allow women) is a great issue.’
