AFL boss Gillon McLachlan has weighed in on Gary Ablett’s future, saying he sympathises with the Gold Coast champion.

Ablett revealed on Thursday night he could retire at the end of the season.

The Suns star is dealing with personal issues, requesting a trade to Geelong at the end of last year which was knocked back.

McLachlan told Neil Mitchell it wasn’t the AFL’s place to intervene, but said players often had issues they needed to deal with.

‘Issues have come up in his life – I don’t know what they are – but things have changed and he’s in a tough spot,’ McLachlan said.

‘I think that happens to people in all forms of work and life.

‘Work becomes a second priority for a period of time.’
