Girl, aged under 13, sexually assaulted during New Year’s celebrations in the city
Police are hunting a predator who sexually assaulted a child aged under 13 during New Year’s Eve celebrations in the city last night.
The girl is believed to have been with family when she was indecently assaulted by a stranger on Flinders Street just after midnight.
Sexual Crimes Squad detectives are working their way through CCTV vision and have a number of enquiries.
No arrests relating to the incident have been made.
Overall, police made 59 arrests as part of the New Year’s Eve operation across the state.
Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said it’s a significant drop from the 99 people arrested for drunkenness and almost two dozen for assaults the previous year.

Provisional statistics for the night indicate there were:
• 37 arrests for drunkenness
• 22 arrests for other offences, including behavioural, theft, and drug-related offending
• 43 penalty infringement notices for traffic offences
• 57 penalty infringement notices for other offences
• 15 cautions were issued
