Government confirms purchase of Heyfield timber mill
The Agriculture Minister says the government will fight for every job it can after it confirmed the purchase of Gippsland’s Heyfield sawmill.
The mill, operated by Australian Sustainable Hardwoods, employs 250 people and has been under threat of closure for some time.
Jaala Pulford won’t say how much the government is paying for the mill in a deal to be finalised within weeks.
But she acknowledges changes will be needed.
“We are entering into this in partnership with the current management, so once those final contractual arrangements have been bedded down, we will be able to sit down with management and the workers and work through the issues,” Ms Pulford told Tony Jones.
