Government to hold national consultation tour as process begins for a republic referendum
The Albanese government will hold a national consultation tour to gauge the public mood, with a republic referendum being considered.
Australia held a republic referendum in 1999 which was ultimately rejected, with the government hoping history won’t repeat itself.
“This is an opportunity for the federal government to listen, to raise awareness about our current system of government, and have that broader conversation about reform so that hopefully, finally, we can have a head of state who really represents us,” Sandy Biar, National Director of the Australian Republic Movement, told Tony Jones, filling in for Neil Mitchell.
