Grandmother of Kyle Chalmers reveals the advice she gave the gold medallist
The grandmother of Australia’s newest swimming star has revealed the one piece of advice she gave her grandson as he weighed up his career options.
‘Nobody can tell you what to do, Kyle.’
Julie Bagnell, grandmother of teenage sensation Kyle Chalmers, told Neil Mitchell the gold medallist almost gave up his swimming to pursue a football career.
While she didn’t pester him, Mrs Bagnell did recall a quieter moment where she offered her thoughts.
‘One day we were sitting in the car waiting for his mum and we were talking about it and I told him ? ‘nobody can tell you what to do, Kyle’ ? everything is your choice in life,’ she explained on 3AW.
‘All grandma will say is that you can be a swimmer first and then a footballer, but not a footballer and then a swimmer.
‘That’s all I’ve ever said to him.’
We’re glad she did!

Mrs Bagnell and her husband Malcolm were flung into the spotlight on Thursday when they were filmed at home watching Kyle storm home to win gold.
She told 3AW she was a bit embarrassed about the whole thing.
