An introduced grass species is believed to be to blame for kangaroos appearing “drunk” across central Victoria.

Manfred Zabinskas, from Five Freedoms Animal Rescue told Ross and John, the pasture crop phalaris is having serious detrimental impacts on the animals’ health.

“They look like they’re drunk but unfortunately it’s far more serious than that because they’re actually being poisoned,” he said.

“They do look like they’re drunk, they’re completely disorientated, their head can flop around almost like they’ve got a broken neck, it’s horrific, they can do somersaults, smash into fences.

“We’re up to our necks in animals that are so bad that they have to be euthanized.”

“We’re seeing large problems through Daylesford, right through Bendigo, Lancefield and down to areas of Melbourne like Sunbury, Epping, Craigieburn,” Manfred said.
