Greens leader Richard Di Natale says gay marriage plebiscite is a ‘really dumb idea’

Richard Di Natale says a plebiscite on same-sex marriage is a ‘really dumb idea’ and fears it will ‘unleash bigots’ in the community.

The leader of the Greens told Tom Elliott on Tuesday the Coalition’s push to have a ‘glorified opinion poll’ on the issue was unnecessary.

He said it was a waste of money and would simply prove what Australia already knew.

‘We just think a plebiscite is a really dumb idea,’ Mr Di Natale said on 3AW Drive.

‘It’s 160 million bucks to have a glorified opinion poll, when we could just come back to parliament and have a free vote and get it over the line.

‘The thing that concerns me most is that it will unleash those bigots in the community that express hateful views.’
