Victorians Greens MP Tim Read admits there will still be a small role for fossil fuels in the immediate future of Australia’s energy grid.

But he’s calling for “enthusiastic” action when it comes to renewables.

The Greens have introduced a bill to stop gas from being installed in new homes from 2025, as well as remove existing requirements for residential developments to be connected to the gas network.

It led to a wider debate on 3AW Drive about the make-up of Australia’s energy grid.

Tom Elliott has solar panels at home but says they’ve been next to useless in recent weeks with dark and gloomy weather.

Tim Read said he’d endured similar struggles.

“The Greens recognise you can’t do it all at once,” he said.

“It’s going to be at least a decade-long project to get there.”
