Greens MP says lack of treaty is ’embarrassing’

Greens MP Lidia Thorpe says it’s “embarrassing” Australia still doesn’t have a treaty with its first people.

The issue is being debated in Victorian parliament on Thursday.

Ms Thorpe told Tom Elliott it presented an opportunity to come up with framework.

“Australia, right now, is the only Commonwealth country in the world that does not have a treaty with its first people,”

“That’s a little bit embarrassing.

“We want to be able to sit down, have a conversation about how we can live, work and prosper together on equal footing through a treaty process.”
