Greens vow to fight Demons’ bold plan for a new MCG headquarters

Melbourne Football Club wants to build a new headquarters right next to the MCG, with a training ground on Yarra Park.

And the Greens are already planning their protest.

The Demons reportedly have their eye on a parcel of parkland in the north-eastern corner of the MCG precinct.

The Herald Sun reports the proposal would also include a six-level complex of office space, a gym and medical facilities.

It would use the space atop rail tracks next to Jolimont train station.

The State Government says it is “in talks” with the Demons, but no decision has been made.

Melbourne Greens MP Ellen Sandell has told 3AW she’ll be out door-knocking, aiming to build local support to thwart the plan.

“Yarra park is really important for local residents,” she said.

“It’s already carved up with car parking a lot of the time, and I think people will be pretty wary about this proposal.”
