The Wiggles have sparked all sorts of debate after the children’s group took out first place in Triple J’s “Hottest 100” of 2021 for their cover of Tame Impala’s Elephant.

It’s led some to question whether the station, created to promote to young Australian bands, has lost its way.

But a former presenter on the radio station says it’s not the first time, and won’t be the last, the winning song had a “novelty” element to it.

“Don’t judge it by the No.1,” Adam Spencer, who presented on the station between 1999 and 2004, told Tom Elliott.

“Again, this year, about 20 to 30 per cent of the songs on this year’s Hottest 100 100 were aired for the first time on Triple J’s Unearthed digital channel.”
