Article image for Health Department modelling reveals confronting reality Victoria may face next month

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Victoria could increase by nearly ten-fold by next month.

Health Department modelling suggests there could be 18,000 infections in the state as early as October 16.

The data also predicts 800 people in hospital by mid-October.

Hospitals are using the data to prepare for a surge in cases, ahead of an eventual easing of restrictions.

Victoria has about 400 staffed intensive care beds available per day.

The state government says it can open 1500 intensive and critical care beds in public hospitals, and that can be scaled up to 4000 beds if the pandemic worsens, but there are concerns there won’t be enough specialist staff available if cases surge to that level.
