The statue of Nicky Winmar was removed from outside Optus Stadium in Perth within 48 hours of Winmar being found guilty of assaulting a woman in northern Victoria in 2025.

While she backs the decision to remove the statue, 3AW Mornings host Heidi Murphy said she was conflicted about whether there might be a way to remember the initial message attached to it.

“I think it’s the right call to make but there’s just this little voice in the back of my head going, ‘Was there an option to not completely remove what has come to represent a significant moment calling out racism in sport?’ ” she said.
