Home Affairs Minister says Djokovic’s visa cancellation is not the fault of the federal or state government
Australia’s Home Affairs Minister says she “can’t give an answer” on whether a future visa will be granted for Novak Djokovic.
Karen Andrews told Tony Jones, filling in for Neil Mitchell, the world number one was “unable to provide appropriate evidence to meet … entry requirements”.
She says any future visa application from Djokovic will “be assessed on its merits”.
Ms Andrews says the cancellation of the tennis player’s visa is not the a federal or state government issue.
TONY JONES: “Who is to blame here? Is it a federal government issue, is it a state government issue or is it just an administrative issue on the part of Novak Djokovic?”
KAREN ANDREWS: “It’s the individual traveller’s responsibility to complete and provide all of the information they are required for entry into Australia.”
The Home Affairs minister says the expectation is that a person whose visa has been denied, like Djokovic, will “depart at the earliest opportunity”.
“We’re working to facilitate the departure of individuals as the need arrives, in a very timely manner.”
