Hundreds of homes have been damaged and dozens of roads left flooded or blocked, with parts of Melbourne copping an entire month’s rainfall overnight.

The rain hit early on Sunday evening, causing flash flooding.

Parts of the Mornington Peninsula copped about 60 millimetres of rain.

The eastern suburbs received between 40 and 50 millimetres.

The SES has so far responded to more than 400 calls for assistance, with Glen Eira and Frankston the worst hit parts of Melbourne.

The rain is expected to clear on Monday afternoon.
