Households told to brace for added costs on next power bill

Households are expected to bear the brunt of the extra cost for last month’s electricity intervention that forced power generators to keep plants going to avoid blackouts.
Companies began switching off coal and gas plants in June on the back of soaring costs, combined with a price cap on wholesale electricity.
But the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) ordered them to keep the lights on.
That triggered compensation.
“I don’t think they’re going to pay it for us,” Gavin Dufty, manager of policy and research at St Vincent de Paul, told 3AW Mornings.
“I think they’ll pass it through.”
