There are calls for Australia to follow the United Kingdom’s lead and slash the tax on draught beer to help reboot the hospitality sector post-lockdown.

John Preston, Chief Executive Officer of the Brewers Association of Australia, said Australia would soon have the third highest beer tax in the world.

“I think the situation is even worse here, I think,” he said.

“We have a much higher beer tax to start with.”

Mr Preston said it was arguable Australia’s hospitality sector needed more help than England’s.

“They’ve probably done it tougher than anywhere else in the world,” he said.
