There are calls for foreign workers to be given free flights to Australia to help the desperately short-staffed hospitality sector.

Wes Lambert is the CEO of Restaurant and Catering Australia and said it was obvious some action was needed.

“There is no silver bullet to solving the entire workforce shortage, but we do know that working holidaymakers, international students and skilled migrants are not returning to Australia in the numbers pre-COVID,” he said.

Mr Lambert said Australia’s reputation internationally had undoubtedly suffered during the pandemic, claiming the nation was seen as a “laughing stock” by some over its draconian pandemic measures and lockdowns.
