Fad weight-loss medications such as Ozempic and Trulicity could be super drugs that also protect the heart and kidneys of obese or diabetic people.

Professor Emeritus at the University of Melbourne and an endocrinologist specialising in diabetes and obesity,  Joseph Proietto, says when weight and glucose are lowered, there are benefits.

“A recent study has shown improvement in cardiovascular health with a higher dose with the semaglutide, which is what Ozempic is,” he told Mark Allen and Jimmy Bartel, filling in for Ross and Russel.

He says while there are concerns the findings will make Ozempic, which is hard to get due to it’s popularity, even harder to find for those who need it for diabetes, the manufacturer has committed to increasing production.

“I believe the company, last year, brought online two production facilties … I think they’re building another one [as well],” he said.
