How Melbourne traffic patterns have changed since pre-pandemic times
While traffic volumes are now similar to pre-pandemic levels, travel patterns on Melbourne’s roads have changed since COVID-19 hit.
Overall, traffic levels are four per cent below pre-COVID times.
But Chris Miller from the Department of Transport says some roads are busier than pre-pandemic, while others are still notably quieter.
“Springvale Road for example carrying only 88 per cent of the pre-COVID baseline, whereas Punt Road and Hoddle Street last Tuesday were carrying more — about 103 per cent of the pre-COVID baseline,” he told Neil Mitchell.
“We certainly have noticed the way the network is being used is different to pre-COVID times — people are making more cross town trips rather than all heading into the city at the same time.”
