More Liberal MPs have stepped up to challenge the Liberal leadership overnight as the Liberal Party prepares to vote later this morning.

Chief state political reporter at The Age Chip Le Grand says the latest challenger, Chris Crewther, is a surprise no one saw coming and could split the conservative faction of the party.

“The significant thing with Chris Crewther is he comes from the same conservative grouping that Brad Battin does,” he told 3AW Mornings.

He also says it appears the Party isn’t operating on who they think would win the next election, noting they seem to ignore traditional polling measures and the fact Pesutto is their most popular opposition leader.

“They’re thinking of things other than who is best to win the next election which sounds like a crazy thing for a party that has spent the last 21 … of the last 25 years in opposition, but maybe that’s where they want to stay,” he said.
